Welcome to the Visual Ecology Laboratory based in the School of Biological Sciences at The University of Queensland, Brisbane. In collaboration with our colleagues at the Queensland Brain Institute, our research group is interested in a variety of visual ecological questions about how marine organisms perceive the world and how their bright and conspicuous colour signals are used as to communicate messages to each other.

Our main research questions focus on:

  • highly contrasting colour signals,
  • function and design of colour patterns,
  • warning coloration (aposematism),
  • colour change,
  • mimicry,
  • chemical ecology,
  • cleaning mutualisms.
